Iraq announced on Sunday that it had sent a 13th medical team to Jordan to treat Palestinians wounded in clashes with the Israeli army, the INA agency reported.
"The team, made up mainly of surgeons and anesthetists, will treat the wounded in one of Amman's hospitals," said the under-secretary of the health ministry, Zuhair Said Abdessalam, quoted by the agency.
Abdessalam said that the medical mission is part of Iraq’s support of the Palestinians in their uprising against 34 years of Israeli occupation.
A surgeon told the agency he believes his participation in such effort is a “holy duty.”
Iraq has been subjected to United Nations sanctions for the last 11 years and has made itself a champion of the Palestinian cause by announcing that it has mobilized more than 6.5 million volunteers for "the liberation of Palestine" and constantly expressing backing for a "holy war" against Israel, according to AFP.
