The Associated Press reported Monday that a former Al Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing attack Monday in a Kurdish stronghold area northeast of Baghdad.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) announced on Twitter Tuesday that it was responsible for the attack yesterday in the Kurdish town of Khanaqin in the Diyala province north of the country's capital.
The attack left 25 people dead and at least 35 people wounded.
The bomber allegedly detonated himself among a group of Kurds who were celebrating the appearance of Iraq's president Jalal Talabani's on the local TV station. The ailing president, who is a Kurd himself, has been in Germany since 2012 for medical treatment.
Over 50 people were killed in Iraq Monday alone ahead of Wednesday's parliamentary elections.
