In the Saydiya district of southern Baghdad, Sunni snipers opened fire and police fired back before a car bomb went off, killing six police and four civilians and injuring 41 people. According to AFP, security officials said a civilian also died while 15 policemen and 10 civilians were injured in the bombing, which followed earlier violence aimed at pilgrims in the capital.
Attackers with guns and a roadside bomb ambushed Shi'ite pilgrims heading for a religious festival in southern Baghdad on Wednesday, killing seven and injuring 10, a police source said.
According to Reuters, the attack in the Dora district of the Iraqi capital occurred after some 150 pilgrims died in a string of attacks on Tuesday. A double suicide bombing south of Baghdad killed 115 pilgrims in a busy street.
Crowds of pilgrims were out on the streets of Baghdad on Wednesday, undaunted by Tuesday's attacks. "A brutal massacre against people who are only practicing their faith" was how Shiite lawmaker Sami al-Askari described the Hillah attacks, which wounded at least 151 people.
