A suicide bomber killed an Iraqi police chief and two other officers Thursday after they inspected the site of the wreckage of an explosion a day earlier that devastated a Sunni neighborhood in the northern city of Mosul. Hisham al-Hamdani, the head of the Ninevah provincial council, raised the casualty toll in that blast to at least 34 killed and 224 wounded.
The explosion on Wednesday collapsed a three-story apartment building and ravaged adjacent houses just minutes after the Iraqi army arrived to investigate tips about a weapons cache, the AP reported.
Elsewhere, a roadside bomb hit a police patrol Thursday in Baghdad, killing two officers and injuring five other people. The blast occurred about 8 a.m. in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Karradah, police said.
Three civilians and two policemen were among the five reported wounded, in addition to the two officers killed.
