Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told Iraq’s security forces Tuesday to stay out of politics, AFP reports. Some Iraqi officials fear the military may intervene in the political scene as Iraq attempts to form a new government.
A statement on Maliki’s website urged security personnel “to stay away from the political crisis and continue in their security and military duties to defend the country,” according to AFP.
Meanwhile, U.S. armed drones carried out air strikes against a mortar position of Islamist militants in northern Iraq. The militants were reportedly firing on Kurdish forces who are attempting to evacuate civilians from the Sinjar area.
