At least 30 militants trying to seize control of the country's largest oil refinery were killed from Iraqi airstrikes Friday, according to the Associated Press.
Iraqi counterterrorism forces spokesman Sabah Al Nuaman told AP that the government aircrafts targeted eight vehicles attempting to take over control from military forces at the Baiji oil refinery, located north of the capital.
Al Nuaman added that militant fighters from the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) have been trying to seize the oil facility for over two weeks.
Government forces also targeted the town of Qaim near the Iraq-Syria border that is now under the control of ISIS. Al Nuaman told AP that the Qaim strike has left a number of casualties, but no clear figure was provided to the media.
