Six members of Iraq's security forces, including an intelligence service captain, were killed on Wednesday in a series of targetted attacks, AFP reported.

On the same day, a prisoner in a Baghdad prison attempted to blow himself up, wounding three guards and one other prisoner. A university department head was also killed when a magnetic 'sticky bomb' was detonated in the College of Agriculture on the Tikrit University campus.

The shootings happened near Fallujah and in Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad. The second shooting in the South, killed intelligence service Captain Muntasser Abdul Rizzaq, according to an interior ministry official.

The attacks on Wednesday, follow a series of bombings across the country, marking a severe deterioration in the security situation in Iraq.
