A car bomb that went off near a cafe in a packed market northeast of Baghdad killed at least 30 people and wounded 40 others, Iraqi officials reported Thursday.
The bomb struck the restive town of Saadiyah, in the Diyala province, according to an Iraqi police colonel and a doctor who spoke to Agence France Presse on condition of anonymity.
The car bomb was detonated at around noon local time (0900 GMT) in a popular grocery market in a neighbourhood dominated by Shiite Kurds, the official added.
The attack came one day after violence ripped across Iraq, including a wave of bombings in Baghdad, killing 59 people and leaving 100 wounded, according to an AFP tally.
The rise in Iraq's sectarian unrest comes just months ahead of the general elections and has seen Baghdad appeal for international support in combatting the increase in sectarian violence.
