One of Iraq’s largest air bases was attacked by militants Wednesday as U.S. teams arrived to assess the country’s crippling security situation, according to Reuters.

The latest attacks came three weeks after radical Sunni group, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) started a violent campaign to establish an Islamic Caliphate across the country.

ISIS and allied Sunni tribesmen clashed with Iraqi forces in the town of Yathrib, some 90 kilometers from Baghdad, with four militants killed, witnesses said.

A nearby air base, known as “Camp Anaconda” during American occupation was surrounded and struck by mortars, Reuters said.

According to the UN, more than 1,000 people have been killed in Iraq's three weeks of violence.
