Iraq: 20 dead in blast as US death toll up

A suicide bomber driving a fuel truck exploded the vehicle near a police station in the Iraqi city of Mosul on Thursday, killing at least 20 people and injuring 20, most of them police, police and hospital sources said.

According to Reuters, hospital sources said the death toll could rise. The bombing at 7:15 a.m. caused extensive damage to the station and there were casualties, according to police Col. Abdul-Karim al-Jibouri.

Meanwhile, another U.S. soldier was killed in combat, the U.S. military said, a day after it announced the deaths of 11 U.S. troops. The US military confirmed a sharp increase in U.S. casualties - 71 so far this month - and said it is tied to Ramadan and a security crackdown that has left American forces more vulnerable to attack in Baghdad and its suburbs.  October is on track to be the deadliest month for U.S. forces since the siege of Fallujah nearly two years ago.
