Iran's Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani is to meet Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos in Madrid on Friday to review latest developments in Iran's nuclear case, it was announced Thursday.
The Spanish news agency EFE quoted Spanish Foreign Ministry sources as saying the two officials are to review the possibility of Iran being allowed access to nuclear technology by Europe.
According to the EFE report, Larijani is expected in Madrid Thursday night after a stopover in Brussels, where he will attend a dinner banquet hosted by European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana.
Larijani was due to hold talks with Solana in Brussels Wednesday, but for "security reasons" the meeting was rescheduled. Reports of the presence of "terrorist squads" in Brussels commissioned by Israel and certain European countries with the aim to assassinate members of the Iranian delegation that was to accompany Larijani to Brussels Wednesday led to the cancellation of the visit, an Iranian source told IRNA.
The visit has now been rescheduled for Tuesday (July 11).
Solana, in a telephone call to Larijani, said cancellation of the visit inflicted a blow on the EU and insisted the talks be held soon. He then invited Larijani to make a stopover in Brussels on Thursday for informal consultations and to attend a dinner banquet.
The source added that Larijani accepted the dinner invitation of Solana to show his "goodwill."
