Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued amnesties and cut the jail sentences of 376 prisoners on Wednesday on the occasion of the birth of the prophet Mohamed, state radio said.
The exact number of amnesties and sentence reductions was not provided, though the prisoners concerned included those condemned by the penal, revolutionary, military and religious courts.
Every year on the birthday of the prophet, the head of the judiciary asks the supreme leader to issue amnesties, according to AFP.
However, those who committed armed robberies, drug traffickers, spies, and those sentenced for threatening state security are excluded from the measure. (Albawaba.com)
