Iran's President Mohammed Khatami Tuesday called for the release of university students detained following protests last June.
Addressing the Shura Council, requesting a vote of confidence for the new Science Minister Faraji Dana, Khatami said, "a number of university students are still being detained since last June's incidents and we hope for their release soon."
The Iranian leader attacked what he called "playing down the university's political role and the attempt by some to distance it as an institution from public life and the main issues of the society."
