Iranian officials called on both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and try to resolve their differences by peaceful means. A statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman distributed by the official Islamic Republic News Agency offered Iranian assistance to the two parties.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi pointed to the sensitive situation in the region as well as the recent telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Iran, India and Pakistan, and expressed hope that the two sides will settle the recent crisis through negotiations at the earliest. Spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi added that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to help reduce the tension between the two countries.
Iran, a neighbor of Pakistan, has been following the rapidly rising tension between Pakistan and India with concern. The Islamic Republic adds its voice to the whole international community in urging restraint upon both sides.
