ALBAWABA - Following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, and after a meeting between the heads of the judicial, executive, and legislative authorities, it has been decided that the presidential elections will be held on the 28th of June.
According to the state-run agency IRNA, the meeting concluded with the following resolutions; the registration of candidates will be done from May 30 to June 3, and the election campaign period will be from June 12 to 27.
Article 131 of the Iranian constitution states the formation of a council to manage the executive affairs of the country for a period of 50 days and prepare for the presidential elections.
Some of the names that surfaced were Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his successor Hassan Rouhani, however, no official announcements were made regarding the official list of candidates.
Speculations have yet to emerge on who is going to be the possible successor of Raisi, First Vice-president Mohammad Mokhber has stepped up to fill in as interim president till the country elects a new leader.
The date has been set after extensive meetings between heads of state, following the tragic helicopter accident that killed President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in addition to several other officials as they were returning home from a state visit to Azerbaijan.
Raisi and the accompanying delegation were returning after taking part in an inauguration ceremony of a dam on the Iran-Azerbaijan border on Sunday when the crash took place, according to Iranian state broadcasters.
Who Is Mohammad Mokhber?
A close personality to the supreme leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, Mohammad Mokhber became vice president when Raisi was elected back in 2021.
As interim president, Mokhber is a member of a three-person committee, with the speaker of parliament and the head of the judiciary, that will call a new presidential election within 50 days after the president's death.
Mokhber held various positions in the country that are of great significance, notably being the head of Setad, an investment fund linked to the supreme leader. For the period of the next 50 days, Mokhber will be assuming the duties of the late president till official presidential elections are held.
