Iran has filed a 50-billion-rial ($28.6m) legal suit against a Russian shipping company for losses inflicted by Sakharov container-carrier ship on Iran's fisheries company and the environment of Iranian territorial waters, Tehran Times reported Wednesday.
Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Transportation Mokhtar Kalantari was quoted by the daily as saying that one container on board the Russian flagged ship exploded in the Iranian territorial waters off Lavan in the Persian Gulf on July 4th, 1993 and as a result chemicals inside the container contaminated the Iranian waters, killing fish and inflicting over Rls.34.5 billion in losses on the fisheries company of Iran."
Kalantari said the Iranian Department of the Environment (DOE) seeks over $1 million compensation for the damage to the environment while the Ports and Shipping Organization has made a claim of $1 million for clearing the debris of the Russian ship and its containers from the seabed -- Albawaba.com
