Iranian police seized more than 6,000 bottles of alcohol that had been marked as vegetable oil, press reports said Wednesday.
The haul was made from a truck outside Tehran that was en route cross-country from the western Kermanshah province to the eastern province of Khorassan, the Kayhan paper said.
The production and sale of alcohol has been forbidden in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution, although Christians and Jews are allowed to consume it.
But the ban is widely disregarded and large amounts of alcohol are both produced internally and smuggled from abroad.
Tehran police official Mehdi Aboui said in July that alcohol seizures were up 160 percent in the previous three months over the same period last year – TEHRAN (AFP)
