On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Russia told Iran that it will withhold fuel for Iran's nuclear power plant unless Tehran suspends its uranium enrichment program as the U.N. Security Council demands.
Igor Ivanov, secretary of the Russian National Security Council, delivered the ultimatum in Moscow last week to Ali Hosseini Tash, Iran's deputy chief nuclear negotiator. Tash, however, denied that Russia had actually issued an ultimatum. He said on Tuesday, "No, I deny this news and the situation was completely the other way around.”
The United States, which accuses Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian program and has urged Russia to cut off assistance for Iran's Bushehr plant, has not yet commented on the ultimatum.
