Iranian nationals were killed in the December 26 killer earthquake and tsunami in Thailand, Iranian Ambassador to Bangkok Mohsen Pakaeen told IRNA on Thursday. Quoting an AFP report, the Islamic Republic of Iran's broadcasting (IRIB), said on Wednesday that five Iranians were among the victims of the Asian disaster. "There are some Arabic names on the list of victims which are similar to Iranian names," said the ambassador, adding "Maybe, it was the similarity which misled AFP and caused it to make such mistake," Pakaeen noted.

Meanwhile, another report from Kuala Lumpur said that the first shipment of relief supplies from Tehran for the victims of the Asian tsunami arrived in Indonesia Wednesday evening local time. The 41-ton consignment included medications, tents, blankets, clothes and foodstuff, an official of the Iranian Embassy in the Indonesian capital told IRNA. He said that Iran would continue dispatching relief supplies to Indonesia.
