Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana agreed on Monday to pursue talks aimed at resolving the nuclear crisis, state television reported. Their telephone talks came days after European Union nations introduced new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear works.
"The two sides agreed to continue negotiations in a constructive atmosphere," the television said. "Solana and Jalili voiced satisfaction at the constructive trend of negotiations in Geneva and the contacts afterwards." Jalili met on July 19 in Geneva with Solana.
In Brussels, Solana's office confirmed the conversation, AFP reported. "Nothing has changed. We stick to the two-track approach. The channels of communication remain open," an official was quoted as saying by Reuters. Asked what he meant by a two-track approach, the EU official said: "On the one side, pressure for sanctions in the United Nations Security Council, but also the offer of dialogue, for the Iranians to come to the table to discuss the package (of incentives) which has been proposed to them."
