Health and safety regulations across the Middle East and their impact on senior management will be a leading theme at this year’s Intersec Middle East exhibition. Regulations and their implications on industry will also feature at the IOSH Middle East Safety and Health Conference, jointly organised by Intersec Middle East.

Ms. Angela Schierholz, Intersec Middle East’s Senior Show manager, stresses the importance the conference has for disseminating  information on best practice in the region to industry managers and key personnel. “Health and safety issues are featuring high on the corporate agenda in the UAE and companies are increasingly recognising their responsibilities in this area,” she says.

“However, not all companies are fully aware of their obligations and that the implications of them being non-compliant with the various regulations could be extremely damaging,” she adds. In addition to giving an insight into the nature of legislation and preventative measures, there will also the opportunity to discuss safety in the construction industry on the last day of the conference.

The conference will be opened by incoming IOSH President Ray Hurst, who will speak about creating a safer International world of work in his key note address on January 13.

On the following day, Ray will be chairing the morning session of the conference, which includes presentations from; Yasser Rahim, Safety and Security Manager at GPIC and Shawqi Sajwani, Group Director of Business Excellence at Dubai Holding

The final day of the conference will focus specifically on safety and health in the construction sector with a number of presentations from leaders in the field, including; Mark Warrington, Vice President of Construction Safety at EHS (Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, Dubaiworld) and Wayne Harris, General Manager, Corporate Safety and Health at Nakheel.

Dr Chris Doyle will also be talking on the final day of the conference about the BuildSafeDubai initiative he has been leading.  BuildSafeDubai is a new initiative which aims to work on safety standards and communicate best practice in Dubai through co-operation.  The initiative already has a number of high profile companies involved, and looks set to grow even further.

The IOSH seminars will be just one of a number of dedicated forums at Intersec Middle East that will examine topical issues and concerns from across the health, safety and security industries. “The Intersec Middle East seminars are one of the most important aspects of the three day show,” says Ms. Schierholz. “They provide the ideal environment for leaders to meet and explore the concerns and new developments within their spheres of interest,” she adds.

IOSH is Europe's leading body for health and safety professionals and functions as an independent, not-for-profit organisation that sets professional standards, supports and develops members and provides authoritative advice and guidance on health and safety issues.

The organisation opened its first branch in the Middle East last year and has seen exceptional growth in membership and profile since . “Last year’s IOSH seminar was one of the highlights of the show, with over 200 professionals attending,” says Ms. Schierholz. “IOSH had just opened their Middle East branch and many of those attending the show were keen to find out exactly about their new role within the country’s health and safety arena,” she adds.

The 2008 edition of Intersec Middle East is set to be the perfect forum for networking, pursuing business and for finding out the latest developments in policing, fire safety, emergency services and homeland security across the Middle East.
“For 2008, Intersec Middle East will have over 30 worldwide and MENA region product launches. 800 exhibitors are booked who will present more than 2,000 brands, and 15 country pavilions will be participating at this year’s exhibition,” says Ms. Schierholz. “The Safety and Health Middle East has attained urgent relevance in the region in view of the construction boom. The segment has registered year on year growth of 30 per cent with the number of exhibitors growing by 40 per cent,” she adds.

Among those booked at Safety and Health Middle East 2008 are Sperian, AEARO Technologies, MSA Middle East, Ansell Healthcare Europe, Bollé Safety, BW Technologies Middle East by Honeywell, Nakheel and Draeger Safety.
