An international flavour for this year’s Pepsi Sports Fiesta

The Pepsi Sport Fiesta has seen an exciting few weeks of competition with teams battling it out in football and basketball at Dubai’s Global Village.

Adding a twist to this year’s Sport Fiesta and representing the diverse ethnic character of Dubai, a large number of unofficial national teams have registered for the fun and games including teams from Nigeria, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, USA, China and even Hungary.

Despite missing out on the finals of the football competition, China’s representatives intense ‘day and night’ training helped them through to the finals of this week’s Slam Jam basketball event. February 1 will also see the return of the Sports Fiesta’s ‘Spinning the Ball’ champion, who is back to break last year’s record of one hour and 20 minutes

 “Although there’s a strong competitive element to the fiesta, it’s all about fun, sportsmanship, and team spirit; that’s the essence of what we want to achieve. The Sports Fiesta has had a great year so far and we are very excited about this week’s basketball and soccer finals,” said May El-Labban, Marketing Projects Manager, Dubai Refreshments Company (DRC), the sole franchisee and distributor of PepsiCo products in Dubai and Northern Emirates.

So far hundreds of players have taken part in the Pepsi Sport Fiesta, and over 16 teams have made it through to the finals taking place on February 1-2. Winning teams will have the chance to win the grand prize of a Chevrolet Spark passenger car courtesy of General Motors.

On February 8 the Pepsi Sport Fiesta will start of the basketball and football tournaments for intermediate and high schools, which run to March. The Pepsi Howzzat School cricket tournament has already with over 34 teams competing in two age groups: under 18’s and under 15’s.

Even if they are not registered to take part, youngsters are invited to use the Pepsi Sports Fiesta facilities at the Global Village site free of charge, every day from 5:00 to 11:00pm, until the end of February.

Dubai Refreshments Company (DRC) will also offer opportunities to win additional prizes including MP3 players, mountain bikes, games consoles and gift vouchers.
