A UN-sponsored conference began its meetings in Algiers on Tuesday, aimed at encouraging more countries to ratify the United Nations' convention against transnational organized crime, officials said.
Up to date, there are 142 signatories to the December 2000 convention, which aims to improve international legal cooperation and eliminate differences between national legal systems to combat cross-border organized crime.
Delegations from Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas participated in the meeting, which was opened by Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, AFP said.
The United Nations was represented by Antonio Maria Costa, director of the UN's Vienna-based Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention. (Albawaba.com)
