A feature article by Ali Fares in the human rights centered Algerian news source Liberte has uncovered the large scale illegal building in the major Algerian city of Constantine. Fares accuses the authorities of ignoring the problem.

No one knows exactly how many illegal buildings there are in the city. Estimates range from 2,000 to 5,000 but the feature accuses the local authorities of being clueless about the exact figures.

It is claimed that the building spree has got worse as contractors realize they can operate more or less with impunity, increasing the incentive to build without official authorization.
