A score of Kenyan women's groups said Thursday that hundreds of women and children were raped by rioters and police during clashes this week in a Nairobi slum that left between five and 11 people dead.
"Hundreds of women and children have been raped by people" Beth Mugo MP told parliament in a motion distributed to the press.
Mugo and other women's leaders said sexual violence and other forms of abuse had been committed both by rioters and by police in Kibera, where clashes erupted this week over a rent row.
They were unable to produce lists of those affected, or witness statements or official complaints.
"In this room, some women were sexually molested but we don't want them to talk without making sure that they will be protected," Mugo said.
"We don't want to point at anybody but we want the government to stop these human rights violations, these women's and children's rights violations," she said.
One woman at the news conference did speak out, on condition of anonymity, saying police had beaten her and asked for money.
The violence in Kibera has prompted thousands of residents to leave the slum for safety, often carrying their meagre possessions with them -- AFP
