Abdel-Malek al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthi rebel movement announced his desire for a peaceful transfer of power following the resignation of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, writes Reuters.

"We are seeking a peaceful transfer of power on the basis of partnership," Abdel-Malek said in a speech broadcast on the group's al-Maseerah television.

"Let everyone go towards cooperation instead of clashing, arguing and wrestling," he continued.

Abdel-Malek also encouraged all Yemeni factions to work together, warning against the risk of the country collapsing. The Houthi leadership is hopeful that intra-country cooperation along with support from the United Nations will help to rebuild the country.

However, citizens throughout Yemen have been strongly protesting the Houthi rebel movement.

On Sunday, Houthis forcefully dispersed an opposition protest near Al-Taghyeer Square and kidnapped some protesters.

Anadolu Agency cited that the move had angered several Yemeni parties, including the Socialist Party, which decided to halt dialogue with the Houthis in reaction. Moments later, the Houthi group released 18 out of a total of 24 people they had held earlier from the protest.
