A 22-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy were killed Tuesday by police gunfire during clashes between voters and security forces in a village north of Cairo on the final day of elections, hospital sources said.
Several people were hurt Tuesday when Egyptian riot police fired tear gas and clubbed protesters who pelted them with stones for blocking their way to polling stations.
A mother and her eight-month old daughter were taken to hospital after being overcome with tear gas while a teenager was hit in the back with a tear gas grenade, leaving a bleeding wound, an AFP correspondent on the scene said.
The clashes erupted after supporters of an Islamist candidate complained that the police were preventing them from going to polling stations in the Bassatine district in southern Cairo.
The crowd, mainly young men, threw stones at the police who blocked their path. The police, who deployed in armored vehicles, retaliated by firing tear gas and moving on them with clubs.
Muslim Brotherhood candidate Abdel Fattah Rizk is running for a seat in the district against Hussein Megawer, who is the top official in Cairo for the ruling National Democratic Party.
Residents of the neighborhood alleged meanwhile that knife-wielding thugs acting on police orders wounded several residents -- CAIRO (AFP)
