ALBAWABA - A destructive 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines, killing at least eight people, according to the Philippines’ civil defence office.
The deaths are still subject to increase as rescue work continues following the collapse of many buildings, the office added.
Officials issued tsunami warnings after the quake that struck off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday.
Tsunami warnings were issued in the Philippines, neighbouring Indonesia and by the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre announced that tsunami waves up to three meters were possible on some coasts. Waves of almost a metre were possible in neighbouring countries, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said authorities were moving fast to coordinate disaster response. "The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind," the president revealed in a statement.
