Hizbullah has appointed a successor to its slain top commander Imad Mughniyeh, killed in a car bomb blast earlier this week in Damascus, a Lebanese security official said Friday. According to the AP, the official did not identify Mughniyeh's successor but said the heir was selected shortly after the news about his death.
"The Hizbullah command appointed a successor to Mughniyeh shortly after news of his assassination broke," the official in southern Lebanon told The Associated Press. The successor was expected to take charge of Hizbullah's armed wing, the official conveyed.
A well-informed Lebanese television station, the private Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, also reported late Friday that Mughniyeh's successor was appointed but did not identify the person. The Lebanese daily As-Safir said that leader Hassan Nasrallah had quickly appointed a replacement for Mughniyeh as head of the secretive "Jihadi Council."
