Hizbullah plans to escalate anti-government protests

Opposition protesters led by Hizbullah are set to stage a mass rally in Beirut on Sunday as part of a fresh drive to force a change in Lebanon’s government.

The demonstration comes on the tenth day of a sit-in attended by thousands of protesters.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora has vowed that Tehran - and Damascus-backed Hizbullah’s attempted “coup” will fail, and leaders of the anti-Syrian parliament majority have repeatedly urged a return to talks.

After the rally kicked off on December 1 with hundreds of thousands of people gathering around the Grand Serail and temporarily blocking access to the building, hundreds of the mainly Shia and Christian protesters have also camped there overnight in tents.

According to AFP, the opposition accuses the current government of weakness and corruption, and claims it no longer represents the Lebanese people.
