A Hezbollah member was killed Tuesday morning after an unidentified blast went off in south Lebanon, causing panic among residents.
Bilal Ahmad Hasan, born in 1985 and also known as Abdo, was killed in the small explosion in Sidon’s Haret Saida.
Hezbollah’s reticence to comment on the incident has added to the confusion surrounding the situation, but officials from the party said it was an accident.
The blast on the ground floor of a three-story building caused panic among residents in the primarily Shiite area.
The Hezbollah officials said that Hasan was killed after an RPG that he was either carrying or inspecting exploded. Members of the party cordoned off the area surrounding the blast, preventing people from approaching the scene.
Security forces and Lebanese Army personnel also attended the scene and opened an investigation into the incident.
The detonation of the device left Hasan with severe injuries and he died after being transported to a nearby hospital.
It was not initially clear what had caused the incident, with preliminary information available indicating that the source of the blast was either an electricity transformer or a gas canister.
However, witnesses said the damage clearly showed that it was either a mortar bomb or an explosive device that was detonated.
News circulated that Hezbollah members frequently headed to the house, but the party did not have an official center there.
