A helicopter crash over Afghanistan killed all 17 Spanish soldiers on board on Tuesday. The crash occurred over Herat, a western region controlled by Spanish soldiers.
The victims had been deployed to the region by the United Nations as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force to ensure calm in the country in light of the upcoming elections in the country scheduled for this September, according to <i>Enditem</i>.
Spanish soldiers number approximately 850 of the 10,000 troops from 37 nation-force.
The crash's cause has yet to be determined.
