Syrian tanks pounded overnight the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk and two nearby neighborhoods in southern Damascus - Tadamoun and Assali, while warplanes bombed Wednesday the northwest of the country, according to a Syrian NGO. Yarmouk and Tadamoun were the scene late Tuesday night of fighting between rebels and the army, who then returned tank fire, said the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based NGO.
On Wednesday morning, several shells were fired at another refugee camp east of Yarmouk camp, said the SOHR without specifying whether the shots came from the army or the rebels.
Damascus and its region have recently returned to the center of the fighting, as rebels intensified their attacks especially from the south of the city and the surrounding countryside, the Ghouta, while the army, which sent major reinforcements says it had consistently rebuffed the "terrorist infiltration."
In the northwest of the country, the Syrian air force carried out in the morning two raids on the town of al-Maaret Noomane, where the rebels took control, including a portion of the strategic highway leading to the city of Aleppo, according to the SOHR.
The rebels seized Maaret al-Noomane on October 9 since then have been facing an unprecedented wave of aerial bombardments.
On Tuesday, over 100 people were killed in violence in Syria.
