NABLUS (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday asked caretaker Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah to form a new government, presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeinah said.
Abbas accepted the resignation of Hamdallah on June 23 after just over two weeks on the job, plunging his government into crisis.
Hamdallah will have five weeks to form a new government, which is likely to comprise independent political figures.
Hamdallah, who was sworn in on June 6, had been incensed by Abbas' decision to appoint two deputies under him in newly created positions, sources in his office said.
At a meeting in Cairo on May 14, Fatah and Hamas agreed on a three-month deadline for establishing a unity government and setting an elections date.
Under the deal, the two sides were to have set up an interim cabinet of technocrats to prepare for elections, before establishing a unity government.
