Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh denied allegations in a speech Saturday linking Hamas to fighting in Egypt's Sinai and Syria, according to AFP.
In a memorial speech marking the two-year anniversary since 1,027 Palestinian prisoners were release in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, the Gaza leader called on media official to stop their "baseless" claims against Hamas.
Haniyeh was quoted saying, "We did not interfere in the affairs of any country and are not involved in the events or differences or internal conflicts of any country... We only act in the Palestinian arena and our guns are turned only toward the Zionist enemy."
Since the overthrow of former Islamist president Morsi, Egyptian authorities have destroyed hundreds of smuggling tunnels on the Gaza-Egyptian border. The destruction of the tunnels, which have served as a main supply line for food and construction materials to the Hamas-controlled strip, has consequently increased tensions between Egypt and Gaza over the past months.
