Guatemala's Foreign Ministry said Thursday it had withdrawn its approval for Jordan's honorary consul because of his “offensive remarks,” reports said.
In a statement, the ministry accused Consul Johny Hazbun Hazbun of making inappropriate remarks during a consul social function on September 27.
The ministry said it sent a letter to Jordan asking for a new honorary consul and expressing a desire for stronger relations in the future, the Jordan Times reported.
However, the ministry did not specify what the remark was.
Hazbun said he believed Guatemalan officials were angry that he asked a colleague about “the deteriorating politics that we read about daily in the newspapers and the corrupt situation in Guatemala.” He said he did not mean to offend the Guatemalan government.
