Six people were killed early Wednesday when a Greyhound bus crashed in the southern US state of Tennessee after a passenger slit the driver's throat with a knife, officials said.

Ashley Glover of Tennessee's department of safety said there were "six deaths confirmed."

The bus was carrying 36 people from Nashville, Tennessee, to Atlanta, Georgia, and crashed in the town of Manchester, Tennessee.

There was no indication that the crash was linked to recent terrorist attacks on the United States, officials said.

"We can't make the link at this point," Glover said. "We can't say that."

Carly Rinearson, a passenger on the bus, told a local television station that a man demanded she give up her place at the front of the bus for him. He was agitated and kept asking for the time, she said.

Rinearson said she refused to give up her place and the man responded by lunging at the driver with a knife.

"He just went up to the bus driver and, like, slit his throat," Rinearson said. "And the bus driver turned the wheel and the bus tipped over."

A spokesman for Greyhound said that all Greyhound bus services nationwide have been suspended "until further notice."
