German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on Wednesday met with his South Korean counterpart Lee Joung-Binn to discuss Germany's rapprochement with North Korea and other bilateral issues, officials said.
Fischer, who arrived Tuesday on a three-day official visit, told Lee that Germany's decision to normalize ties with Pyongyang would contribute to the peace on the Korean peninsula, officials of the foreign ministry here said.
During the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) here last month, German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder announced his government's move to set up diplomatic relations with the North.
South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung has called on Western countries to set up diplomatic ties with North Korea in a bid to engage the isolated communist state in dialogue and exchanges with the international community.
Lee briefed Fischer on South Korea's efforts to keep the momentum for peace and reconciliation which was created by a historic inter-Korean summit in June in Pyongyang.
Fischer was also scheduled to meet with Kim Dae-Jung before leaving for Indonesia Thursday -- SEOUL (AFP)
