The German foreign ministry announced Thursday that there are indications that the kidnapped German diplomat in Yemen is still alive.

In a statement to Kuwait news agency (KUNA), a spokeswoman for the ministry, Anita Lindatseh, said that a message from the diplomat has been discovered in Yemen, which gives hope that he is still alive.

She did not elaborate on the content of the letter.

Two weeks ago in an area near the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, a number of unidentified Yemenis kidnapped 22-year-old Karl Christian, an official in

charge of commercial affairs at the German embassy. He was led to an unknown destination outside the city.

His kidnappers were a group of five gunmen who belong to a tribe located in the province of Maarib, north of Sanaa.

Kidnappings in Yemen are mostly carried out as a means to press the government to pay more attention to less privileged areas, or meet demands by tribes – Albawaba.com
