A 17-year-old Syrian national suspected of planning a suicide attack in Berlin has been arrested, a local government minister said on Tuesday.

The arrest took place in the Uckermark region north-east of Berlin, said Karl-Heinz Schroeter, the interior minister of the state of Brandenburg.

Schroeter added that evidence against the teen included a Whatsapp message to his mother in which he made reference to a terrorist plot.

Berlin's daily BZ newspaper reported that the suspect arrived in Germany as a migrant in 2015 and had been living in a refugee home for unaccompanied minors in the Uckermark region since 2016.

The teen is currently being questioned by police and his accommodation has been searched for evidence.

Germany has been on high alert since Tunisian national Anis Amis drove a truck into a Berlin Christmas market in December, killing 12 people. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.
