German Chancellor rejects Bush threats against Iran

Published August 13th, 2005 - 03:02 GMT

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Saturday rejected the threat of military force against Iran, a day after U.S. President George Bush said he would consider it as a last resort to press Tehran to give up its nuclear program.

On his part, Schroeder said that the threat of force was not acceptable. "I am worried about developments there because no one can want the Iranian leadership to gain possession of atomic weapons," Schroeder noted. "The Europeans and the Americans are united in this goal. Up to now we were also united in the way to pursue this."

In an interview aired by Israel's Channel 1 TV on Friday night the US leader said if Iran doesn't halt its nuclear program, "all options are on the table." "We've used force in the recent past to secure our country," he said.
