Ethiopian long distance running legend Haile Gebreselassie started his countdown to the Sydney Olympics with a win at the IAAF meet in Milan, Wednesday.
Gebreselassie won the 5,000m - his only Olympic event - but in the sluggish time of 13min 01.60s.
A long way off peak condition he led without ever forcing the pace, beating Kenyan Kabii in a sprint. Another Kenyan Sammy Kipketer took third.
The USA's Tyree Washington won the 400m in 44.84s ahead of his compatriot Jim Davis - (AFP)
