Gaza Strip: Israel increases flow of goods as calm holds

Published June 22nd, 2008 - 02:11 GMT

Israel increased the flow of goods into the Gaza Strip on Sunday, a military spokesman said, in the latest stage of a four-day-old calm with Hamas. A total of 90 trucks entered Gaza Strip through the Sufa crossing during the day, up from between 60 to 70 before the calm went into effect, said spokesman 2nd Lt. Gil Karie. Further increases will be weighed if the quiet continues, he said, according to the AP.

Ihab Ghussen, a spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry in Gaza, said the increase was in keeping with the terms of the calm brokered by Egypt. The goods include milk, fruits and vegetables and other food products. Other goods, like cement, are supposed to be allowed in 10 days after the beginning of the truce, Ghussen conveyed. But the amount of fuel sent into the Strip remained unchanged Sunday.

The calm has held since it went into effect on Thursday morning following months of clashes between the Israeli military and Palestinian fighters firing rockets at Israeli towns and attacking Israeli troops along the border.
