Two people died in a hail of machinegun bullets when armed Islamic extremists burst into a cafe south of Algiers and opened fire, security forces said Wednesday.
The attack took place at around 8:00 pm Tuesday in the Medea region, some 80 kilometers south of the capital. A waiter and one customer were killed when the assailants strafed the cafe's clientele.
The security forces provided no details about the number of assailants or the victims' identities. The hard-line Armed Islamic Group (GIA) is known to operate throughout the region, according to AFP.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two policemen were killed and one wounded Tuesday night by armed attackers in Bouira, in the troubled northeastern Kabylie region, the El Watan newspaper reported Wednesday. (Albawaba.com)
