A French citizen has died after being attacked by cellmates in a Cairo police station. Security officials said that the man had been detained in the Qasir il-Nil police station after being arrested in the upmarket Zamalek neighborhood for breaking a night-time curfew.
He was later attacked by cellmates after in the Qasr il-Nil police station where he died due to internal hemorrhaging and skull injuries.
Egyptian officials have detained six of the cellmates are being detained as part of investigation into the death.
The victim did not have a valid visa at the time of his arrest, the security officials said. The French embassy said he was a long-term resident of Egypt. French Embassy officials have asked for details about the man's death. They are still awaiting a reply.
Cairo has been engulfed in protests and riots since the Muslim Brotherhood government was deposed by the military in July. Earlier today, security forces detained the spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood.
