ALBAWABA - After his party failed to win a majority in parliamentary elections, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that he will be submitting his resignation later on today.
"Tonight, the political formation I represent in this campaign has no majority. I will submit my resignation to the president tomorrow morning," Attal told reporters in a press conference following the results of the second round of general elections.
According to the most recent forecasts from Ifop, the New Popular Front (NFP) might gain 180 to 205 members in the National Assembly, the lower chamber of parliament.
The centrist coalition, Together for the Republic, led by President Emmanuel Macron, finished second with 164 to 174 seats, while Marine Le Pen's National Rally is expected to win 130 to 145.
The National Assembly has 577 members of parliament, and none of the three dominant blocs is expected to win an outright majority of 289 seats. The first round was held on June 30, and 76 candidates were successfully elected without the need for a second round.
President Macron dissolved parliament and called early elections after the RN won more than 31% of the votes in the European Parliament elections on June 9, beating his centrist alliance.
The French Communist Party, the center-left Place Publique, the far-left France Unbowed Party, the more moderate Socialist Party, the Green Ecologist Party, and numerous smaller parties make up the NFP.
It was created only a few days after President Emmanuel Macron announced the early legislative election, following his centrist party's humiliating loss to the far-right RN party led by Marine Le Pen in the previous month's European Parliament election.
