French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine accused Israeli right-wing leader Ariel Sharon on Monday of deliberately sparking the outbreak of violence Israeli-Palestinian which has left nearly 40 people dead in the past four days.

Vedrine "condemns without reserve the deliberate provocation by Ariel Sharon, undertaken for domestic political reasons at a highly sensitive moment in the peace process," a statement from the foreign ministry said.

"I deplore the violence which has resulted. I call on the two sides to show their sense of responsibility, to stop the spiral of violence and to intensify their efforts for peace," the statement said.
