British human rights campaigner James Mawdsley arrived at Bangkok international airport late Friday after being freed from prison in Myanmar, where he was sentenced to 17 years in jail in September 1999.
Mawdsley, 27, was jailed after being caught in possession of "subversive" literature which criticized the regime in Myanmar.
Earlier British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said in a statement: "James's only crime was to highlight the suppression of ethnic minorities in Burma and to call for democratic change."
Mawdsley landed in Bangkok after leaving Myanmar capital Yangon earlier Friday and is expected to depart for London later Friday after holding a press conference -- BANGKOK (AFP)
