French President, Jacques Chirac said France supports a political solution to the Sahara problem in the framework of the United Nations, said, Monday, the Elysée spokesman, Jérôme Bonnafont, according to MAP.
Speaking after a meeting between the French leader and visiting Moroccan Prime minister, Driss Jettou, the spokesman said that Chirac "asserted that France backs a political solution to the Sahara issue in the framework of the United Nations," adding that this dispute was brought up during last Tuesday's meeting between Chirac and the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The Sahara dispute is opposing Morocco to the Algeria-backed Polisario Front that claims the separation of Morocco’s southern provinces known as the Sahara. The former Spanish colony was recovered by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords, signed with Mauritania and Spain.
