Former Spokesman for Nasser, Sadat dies in London

Tahseen Basheer, a veteran top diplomat, who served as official spokesman for two of Egypt's late presidents has died.  

 

Basheer was 77 years old when he died Tuesday in London, according to his wife, Laila Basmy. She said his body would be brought to Egypt for final burial.  

 

A close friend and fellow diplomat, Abdul Raouf el-Reedy said Basheer had suffered from heart problems and was being treated in the British capital, according to the Saudi Press Agency.  

 

Basheer, a business graduate from the Alexandria University was a former ambassador to Canada, a spokesman for the late Egyptian leaders, Gamal Abdul Nasser and Anwar Sadat. In addition, he also served as Egypt's representative to the Arab League.  

 

"He was a great personality, a distinguished diplomat and communicator. He was dedicated and believed very much in peace," el-Reedy, himself a former ambassador to the United States, said of Basheer. (albawaba.com)
